A couple of weeks ago I was working on a project with the boys from The Final Movement. My job was to film a new script they had produced based on Jonah. Who is Jonah? A Biblical character whose most famous exploit is being eaten by a whale. Enjoy.

Playing with Glass

If you have seen any of the work by the Multimedia artist/film maker Bruno Aveillan you may have come across one of the techniques I have used in these images. To explain, these images were not created using a Tilt Shift lens nor has there been any photoshop work to create the distortion and blur. In fact the only Photoshop work that has occurred on these images is a Black and White conversion and a contrast adjustment.

The effect itself is not difficult to create, but rather difficult to control. To create this effect you hold a piece of class with optical imperfections, in from top of the camera lens. This distorts and destroys the image in the areas where the the most optical imperfections occur. As the glass is moved around the image effect moves. In theory this is a very simple process, however,finding glass with the the right combination of optical imperfections and positioning it for the best results does take time.

A fashion story in Canberra – EDITION

November 201, and I was doing one of my regular trips to Canberra to photograph the collections of Amy Taylor and Alice Sutton, final year design students at the Canberra Institute of Tafe. I have enjoyed working with these two for the last couple of years, as they produce some amazing work. If you are a reader of CULTURE magazine you would have seen an article about Amy and Alice in the latest edition. This post is not about both of their works but rather one at at time. This first series was photographed at the Canberra Observatory. Although destroyed in the 2003 Canberra fires, the surrounding structure still stands and dates back over 100 years.

Fire Station No. 6

Last year I was working as Director of Photography on a short film entitled Fire Station No 6, with director Freshteh Piltan. Its a beautiful conceptual film about consumerism and development. In Freshteh’s words,

‘In the planet of lost souls, where educations taught through television, Skippy grew up as the perfect consumer.

An itool, shaped as an iwant, on unconscious repeat.
Trapped in the game called ‘planned obsolescence.’

I love Christmas as it is an opportunity to catch up with family, and I may be biased, but I have a wonderful family. Growing up on a family farm meant that all the cousins spend a lot of time together. We played together, worked together and argued together, and now getting back together is a highlight of my year. It seems to be becoming a tradition that I love to photograph the cousins kids at Christmas. It is wonderful to see the children growing up and watching their developing personalities. These are one of my older cousins, two amazing little girls. The oldest has been nicknamed ‘ReRe’ while the youngest is referred to as ‘G’. I hope you enjoy these images as much as I enjoyed taking them.
